Happenings in the Workshop

I have not posted in a while. Probably because I have so

many unfinished projects on the go and wanted to show

the pictures of the finished pieces.

The shop has been too cold too paint but the electrician

is coming in and fixing us up.

Here are some of the projects we have been working

over the past while.

The buffet and hutch was built around the antique doors.

I love this hardware.

They are called Rattail Hinges.

Mousey Hinges would have sounded better.

They are a little tricky and time consuming though.

Well worth it when all is completed.

There are doors and shelves for this armoire.

When I get a chance I will paint it blue

and add a saying somewhere then

antique the whole piece.

A friend picked up this piece and painted

it white. The mirror is so pretty. It sold very quickly.

I will post pictures of the kitchen we will

be finishing off over the next couple of weeks.

I love the pantry so will get those pics up as

we are finishing it.

So many wonderful things to create.

I was very excited about being able to place some of our

workshop pictures into a video. I am still learning how

to do so many things. I just love the internet. There

is so much to discover and learn.

A Girls Best Friend - Bondo

If you have big holes, cracks, or broken edges to

repair, bondo works the best. There is no

shrinkage or cracking when it dries.

A quick note here. Use only when you are painting

your project. Pretty blue or pink bondo obviously does

not look good with lovely stained wood.

Bondo is a two part process.

There is the stuff in the can and a hardner in a tube.

When the two are mixed a different colour is created.

You must not forget to add the hardner.

I have been busy and not paying attention and

have bondoed everything and forgot the hardner.

You then have to go back and dig and scrape out

all your work. Aaah!

Follow the directions on how much hardner to add.

Wear a mask and use in a well

ventilated area.

Mix the two ingredients together well.

You have to work quickly as the more hardner you

add the faster it dries. When it starts to go from a spreadable

paste to a gritty mixture time has pretty well run out.

I leave a bit of a raised area of bondo where the hole is.

Other than this, I try and scrape all the excess off.

After the bondo has dried, which is usually under 10 minutes,

sand off with 150 or 180 grit.

Countersink Your Screws

If you are not already countersinking

then this tidbit is for you.

  Treat yourself to a predrill set.

Here is my short tutorial.

Countersinking your screws gives

you a much better finish. It also

helps to decrease the chances of 

splitting the wood and helps

to guide your screw. 

Predrill sets look like this 

and usually come in packages of three.

Just drill your pilot hole where

you were planning on putting

your screw. There are different

lengths of countersink bits available.

This picture is a little blurry but you get the idea.

You only want to drill down enough to have

the screw drop in about 3/8 or so.

If you go in too far the screw may push right through.

You can see by this last photo that the screw

is just below the surface of the wood.

Now you can go ahead and fill.

This shabby chic bed was designed around old stair spindles.

The posts are 3 1/2" pine. The rest was made from

both recycled fir and pine planks.

Maggie purchased this bed and her flair for

decorating made this made truly a shabby chic masterpiece.

TO ALL MY SUPPORTERS

First of all I would like to thank all my customers and supporters

who have encouraged me to continue over this last couple of years.

For those of you who do not know, it has been a little bumpy

since the birth of my daughter, Nevaeh. My life has changed drastically

and of course for the better. She is way to adorable.

My idea with this blogsite is to share a little inspiration

along with many of the projects we will be working on.

I will be getting my butt moving and be posting the How Too's

on many of the projects. If I am really daring I will provide videos

also. If I can get over the "I have to lose 40 pounds" mentality.

We shall see.

Obviously, that is not me in the picture above lol.

Comments and followers are great as this is what keeps me

MOTIVATED.

Closet Doors Barn Style

add so much interest to this wonderful home.

The black hardware is fabulous, especially

the ring handles. They are heavy.

When I get a chance I will post

a tutorial. These doors are

not hard to do and can be made

to fit almost anywhere.

Fir Topped Island and Farmhouse Sink

This has always been one of my favourite kitchens.

Reclaimed fir was used on the island and smaller counter.

An antique window added both character to the kitchen and

light to the stairwell behind.

The farmhouse sink and fir turnings pulled

the whole look of this amazing kitchen together.

Chimney Cabinet

This armoire is seven and a half feet tall. I just love it. You cannot really tell

but there is chicken wire in the openings on either side. The doors were created

from one solid antique door cut in two.

Another Sunday Market Project

This past Sunday Market project was to make a sign. This particular sign

was for a birthday gift so we had to have it completed.
Liz has four adorable goats.

It took most of the five hours just to hand paint the checkers.
It was nuts but so much fun.

The handmade heart shaped hooks I found in a box of
forgotten junk down at the shop.

I thought it turned out great.

If you live in the area, we try to attend the Sunday Market at the
Cobble Hill hall every week.

This coming Sunday we will be making birds nests and Easter/Spring wreaths.

A Very Creative Vanity

Antique Door Headboard

Twig Chandelier

A friend of mine saw this gorgeous twig chandelier
on Funky Junk Interiors. Deanna Wish Designs has an incredible site
where these chandeliers may be purchased. They start at 1400us.
Needless to say, Gerri decided to make her own so off she came to
the Sunday Market where I would help her.
WE DID IT! And it turned out gorgeous.

Basic Antiquing Technique

Materials Required

Drop cloth, 150 grit sand paper, hand sander, latex paint, gloves, cotton rags, oil stain, paint thinner, brushes, stripper (optional), mask, well ventillated area.

Solid wood furniture or at least a high grade plywood tends to be the best for creating an authentic old look. There are a number of ways to get the distressed look using paint. The following is a basic step by step instruction on how to accomplish this. There are many other advanced and cool techniques for aging furniture. I will write another post on this in the next couple of days.

1/ Preparing the Surface: Remove all hardware. Tape off any glass. The surface of the piece must be shine free. If the original paint is oil, it is best to have the item stripped or at least sanded down more so than latex. The goal is to create a tooth for the latex paint to adhere to. You cannot put a latex paint over top of an oil paint. If you want to avoid using stripper, then it needs to be sanded down to roughen up the surface, then a primer can be applied. I use alot of Kilz. If you want to get down to bare wood and the paint is thick, I first use stripper and then sand off the rest. I prefer to use 180/150 grit sand paper. When working with plywood, it is very easy to break through the top layer into the glue and the other materials below. If you know your piece is plywood, then give the piece a light sand to get the shine off and then use a primer. If you know for sure the item is latex then just a light sand will do the job. Remember you need to create a non slippery surface with some "teeth" for the next layer of paint to adhere to.

2/ Applying the Paint: I use latex paint on my furniture. Brush on your first coat. I like the look of brush marks. Depending on the look you are going for, a number of paint layers of different colours may be applied. The first coat is the one that will show through the least. Crackling or applying wax between the layers will also add to the aged look. I will also toss in some sawdust to create a little texture. More paint layers gives more character. Especially when you sand through those layers.

3/ Sanding: When all your coats of paint are thoroughly dry you are able to start the distressing. Using 150 grit sandpaper, sand off all the edges where the normal wear and tear would be...around the knobs, on the corners, especially around the base. For a more worn look, bang the piece up a little more to your liking with set of old keys, a hammer, screw driver, be careful with the chains. I will quite often gouge out areas with a chisel, just be careful.

4/ Applying stain: I stain over top of the entire piece to get the look I like. The darker stains like walnut work the best. Oil stain is applied with a rag for better control. Use gloves and stain in a well ventillated area. Small brushes are used to get into the cracks. It is best to have a couple of rags when doing this. Excess stain is wiped off using paint thinner. I will leave more stain in the cracks and in the corners to give an older look. Remove stain until you get the look you like. Artists oil paints that come in the tubes have great colours for antiquing. I use black around the edges and corners for a more dramatic look.

5/ The Finish: Best to let your project dry for at least 24 hours. A water based finish may be applied or I prefer a good old wax finish. Keep to a dull finish for best results.

The red blanket box has the few extra steps involved to make this piece appear even older. As mentioned earlier, I will get to this post in the next couple of days.

Vintage Easter Post Cards

I found some of these adorable Vintage Easter Post Cards
on the Graphic Fairy. What a great site. All the knowledge I have
acquired over this last year while building this blogsite may be attributed
to all the free tutorials. I am so grateful to those who have helped me.
One day when I get it all figured out, I too, will pass this kindness along.

Oh, and back to these adorable Easter Postcards. I will set aside a couple of
hours this week to make an Easter Tree using the postcards. Enjoy!

Gerry and Don's Kitchen

This kitchen is alot of work but it will be so pretty when it is done.
This home is lovely and it feels wonderful.
The hood fan box will have additional molding and a shelf with corbels.
Crown molding will be added to the top of all the cabinets.
The butcher block countertop is gluing up in the shop as I write this post.
Still working on handles and the farmhouse sink cabinet.
This kitchen has cabinet doors that are over a inch thick and
the cabinetry itself is completely free of mdf/press board.
Final pictures will be posted at the end of the week.

Mobile Home Kichen Remodel

This is a kitchen in a mobile home that we had updated.
New doors, new countertops, addition of crown molding and a fridge
surround with a slide out tray and bakeware storage.
We are still waiting on the black tiles.

Scalloped Armoire

I did not get a picture of this armoire before it left for its new home
at SweetPeas At Home however, I did manage to get a couple of
pictures when I was at this fabulous store today. I added a little saying
to the inside of the door. I like unexpected surprises when you open
the door. The front of the cabinet has great hardware
on the planked doors. I will be certain to get a picture with
the door closed when I am there again.

Eight Drawer Dresser

This dresser was almost five feet tall and four feet wide.
The raised panels in the drawers were a little tricky with the
table saw but the result was fabulous. A little antiquing gave
this piece lots of character.

Handpainted Window Cabinet

Carolyn brought her paints to the Cobble Hill Sunday Market. The
handpainted blueberries go wonderfully with the green interior.
When antiqued more of the green paint will show through also.
I just love using the old windows on the cabinets.

A Great Find

Today was truly wonderful. I came across more of these
beautiful corbels. I think I will use two of them for a wall shelf
and hanger. There is just something about time worn

Barn In A Bedroom

We live in a small 940 foot cabin that we have been trying to transform
this past year. It has one small room in an otherwise open space.
Suddenly, I had to have another room. NOW. No time for drywall
and I wasn't going to sit around and wait for the mud to dry.
I have some 2 x 6's that were from an under water salvage so that was
what we used. I was getting a little worried as it was looking more
and more like something you would find in a barn.
It is now up to the ceiling since this picture was taken. It took only
a day to build and I love it. Now we are painting.
Will post the finale.

Lovely Blue Island

We are just starting to install this really pretty kitchen. The island
is blue and will be distressed to make it look older. The granite top is
lovely. The colours do not show up in the pictures too well.
Fancy brackets/corbels will be placed just under the overhang
at either end. More to come.

This buffet is going to be so pretty when installed. There is a beautiful antique

fir top that will follow the posts around. The doors have pretty moldings.

The whole piece will be antiqued with burnt umber then waxed.

DREAM BOARDS

I made this vision board today for a workshop I will be giving.

This idea has been around for years but so many people

have never heard of them.

Personally, I started one but never finished it.

(I am a great procrastinator)

The idea of the Dream/Vision Board is to put pictures onto some form

of "board" that is ultimately placed where one can see

it on a daily basis. This is to remind us of what we wish for.

In this picture, I have yet to embellish it with my "heart's desires". I will do this

at the Sunday Market tomorrow as part of my demonstration.

Getting this picture on my blogsite was part of my to do list today.

The "How To" portion will also be posted tomorrow.

The Little Things

We woke up to snow this morning but what a lovely day. While adding more bedding to the chicken house, I took this photo of the daisies sitting on the bail of straw. I just love the old milk jar carrier that I found at a garage sale.

I am trying to make more time this year for all the little things like these daisies. Such a small detail but what a wonderful feeling they bring to your home.

This armoire was originally showcased in an earlier post. Mustard paint was applied to the framework and the panels were handpainted with florals to match the bed linens. Rattail hinges and distressing added to the wonderful character of this lovely piece.

Laura's Recreation

This entertainment centre was all wood (pine) therefore it had great bones to work with. Panels were added to the sides and the fronts of the drawers. New bottom trim was added and a much larger crown molding. Two doors were also built for the large opening.

These nightstands were built using reclaimed fir. A little more staining is required and some hardware and then they are off to join the rest of the bedroom set.

Porch Posts

One of my friends discovered these great eight foot turned porch posts and sent them my way. I am still glowing. They are edge grain fir below the old white paint. The posts came out of a 1940's home in Victoria. From what I was told, the owner of these wonderful newels was a sea mariner. He obviously had great style. I am not too sure what I will create with these. I was thinking of a king size canopy bed with a scalloped head board.

Janine and Jer's Wine Cabinet

This wine cabinet is five feet long. The entire piece has been built from reclaimed fir beams. Some of the nails were impossible to get out of the old timbers so they have been exposed in parts. The black from the oxidation of the nails adds such character. Love this piece. The top hutch is almost finished and will soon be posted......

Lorna's Armoire

The panels on this armoire are being handpainted with florals. The entire armoire will then be aged using crackle, glazes and oil paints.

Sophia's Island

This island is now in Sophia's sewing room. We are still waiting for the rest of the handles to arrive. It measures 46" x 87" and is made up of 21 drawers, lots of antiquing and a walnut top. For some reason these pictures always make the furniture blotchy. I should probably sign up in a camera course :) Two bar stools fit where the panelled side is in the centre. Not shown are the sides which each have two panels as in the lower picture. This island has plenty of detailed moldings. The drawers are surrounded by a 1/2" bead. The top has yet to be properly attached in these pictures.

Lyndsay and Bill's Dresser

This dresser was built using antique edge grain fir lumber and measures 48" wide and 54" tall. If you scroll to the bottom of the blog you can see it's origins in the lumber pile. The design matches the custom king size bed which is also featured in this blog. There is still another four coats of stain to go. Heavy rustic steel handles will be added. A while in the making but we love this dresser. Nightstands are in the works.

Lorna's Armoire

This great armoire measures roughly 42" wide with shelving inside. The entire armoire will be painted a cream colour. The panels will be a warm light gold with coffee cream and manilla accenting the moldings. The panels will be lightly handpainted with subtle florals. The entire armoire will then be distressed with stain and tinted wax. As soon as this masterpiece is done the pictures will be posted.

When older homes or smaller condos have little to no closet space, armoires are the answer. Built in armoires allow for even more storage. In this gorgeous James Bay home, we have built two of these armoires, one for each side of the window. Both were built using rare 22" raised panel doors. The inside is for hanging. Although not shown, there are drawers on full extension slides being installed in the bottom of each armoire. The crown molding was added on site as they are floor to ceiling. I love the detail in the panels on the sides.

This door was a great find for Kim's kitchen. It will be used for her new pantry that will be incorporated into the new kitchen. The leaded glass is intact but the rest of the door needs serious attention, but the results will be fabulous

Margaret's Armoire

This gorgeous armoire measures 7 feet x 7 feet. The panelled sides and custom molding add dimension and character while the anitiquing enhances the details. The tongue and groove backing is not shown in these picture.

Curbside Appeal

This picture was taken just down the street from my parent's house. I enjoy driving past Sandy's house as she is always changing things around. I phoned her at work and left a message asking if I could take a picture of the bears she had painted. She did not know it was me and was given the message that there was a bear in her yard. Her next call was to the conservation officer...too funny.

King Size Bed From Reclaimed Lumber

This beautiful king size bed was constructed using 6x6 posts from a turn of the century house in Victoria. I had been lugging them around for the past 5 years just waiting to build something unique with them. No screws or nails in this bed. We are presently working on the complementary dresser and nightstands.

Salvaging the Timber

Here are pictures of what most of the lumber starts out as. These planks will be resawn and planed down to the desired dimensions....plenty of work but we really enjoy it. This particular lumber was out of an old wharehouse in Saanich built in the 1930's. The dents, nail holes and general ware and tear over the years give amazing character to the new pieces. Every piece has it's own unique story.

Sophia's Island

The following is a picture of Sophia's craft island which is coming along. 25 drawers constructed from solid wood with full extension drawer slides. Bull nose molding surrounds the openings of the drawers, panelled sides, 3/4 birch plywood for the boxes and pine face frame and moldings. Total size is 7ft x 44in. Solid walnut top. Base will eventually be painted black and distressed/antiqued. As per usual the puppy always wants to be the centre of attention.
